I wrote this prayer a couple years back, but only recently entitled it “For the Weak.” Originally, this was a confession used in a gathered worship service. This prayer sets the weakness of humans against the backdrop of the enormity of God. No matter how low or small one may feel, this does not so obscure them from the sight and stewardship of our Savior, for his reach is great and to be in His hands is true comfort, for no one and nothing may snatch from Him (Jn 17:12). Weakness is no flaw in humans as we are tempted to suppose, but is in fact that place where God’s strength is most clearly expressed. The Shepherd is not surprised that the sheep need all things provided to them. If you are in a place of weakness, I hope that this prayer is able to lift your eyes up to take comfort in the One who still remains in control. I list the passages which inspired the prayer below for you edification.
From Isa 40:21-31, 55:8-9; Acts 20:24; Eph. 3:18; Ps 119:11; Ecc 3:11; 1 Cor 9:16-27; Matt 16:21-28.
To the One who breathes life itself, I have imagined I am hidden, my troubles invisible. I have dreamed I am alone, unaided, and abandoned. Yet my thoughts are not Your thoughts, and You are not startled by my fears. I am fragile, finite, fading, while You endure, endless, everlasting. Your reach exceeds my wanderings, Your power excels in my weakness. Forgive me my frailty, and set these in my heart instead: Your word, that I might not sin against You; eternity, that my eyes may see as You do; and Christ Himself, that I may discern the drastic dimensions of Your love for me. Amen.
